A shooting in Oktibbeha County, Mississippi, has resulted in the tragic deaths of two young men, identified as Jordan Mitchell, 21, and Kaiden Evans, 18. Both victims were local residents of Starkville, and the incident occurred during a party in the Blackjack community late Saturday or early Sunday morning.
Emergency responders transported both Mitchell and Evans to a Starkville hospital, where they were later pronounced dead. The Oktibbeha County Deputy Coroner Billy Miller confirmed their identities shortly thereafter, prompting public concern about safety in the community.
Witnesses reported hearing gunfire during the party, where many attendees were present at the time of the shooting. Exact details of how the confrontation began remain unclear, and local authorities have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The Starkville Police Department has requested the public’s assistance in gathering any additional information related to the shooting. No arrests have been made yet in connection with this incident, and police have assured the community that there is no ongoing danger. The investigation continues as officers work to piece together the events leading up to the shooting.
This incident follows another shooting that took place just days earlier at the Quality Inn in Starkville on Thursday, where two men were also fatally shot. The victims in this separate shooting were identified as Veshawn Williams, 25, from Columbus, and Robert Mayfield, 27, from Memphis. This incident occurred around 11:04 a.m. following a physical altercation between the two men, who were known to each other.
Reports indicate that Williams was wanted by the Columbus Police Department for related criminal activity, including kidnapping and aggravated assault involving his girlfriend. During the argument with Mayfield, which involved the presence of both men’s family ties—Mayfield was the cousin of Williams’ girlfriend—gunfire erupted, leading to both individuals sustaining life-threatening injuries.
Following the shootout, Mayfield managed to drive himself to a nearby State Urgent Care center for medical assistance, where he later succumbed to his injuries. Williams remained at the Quality Inn and was pronounced dead at the scene. Multiple 911 calls prompted law enforcement to respond to the area, and authorities confirmed that the shooting was not part of an ongoing threat to the public.
The recent surge in violence has raised alarm within the Starkville community, prompting calls for increased safety measures and community support to address the underlying issues contributing to such incidents. While law enforcement is focused on resolving both shootings, community leaders are also reflecting on the pressing need for conflict resolution initiatives and outreach programs.
As the investigations into both shootings continue, authorities are working diligently to provide updates to the public. Residents are urged to remain vigilant and report any relevant information to help ensure safety within the community.
This is a developing story, and further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
