Metal detectors at the entrance of a Starkville school

News Summary

The Starkville-Oktibbeha Consolidated School District is enacting stricter security protocols, including mandatory metal detectors, after two firearm-related incidents. A handgun was found in a student’s backpack at Henderson Ward Stewart Elementary, and a loaded ammunition clip was discovered at Partnership Middle School. District officials emphasize the importance of parental involvement in ensuring school safety. The new measures aim to create a secure learning environment while addressing growing concerns within the community about school safety. These protocols will remain effective until at least the end of the school year.

Starkville – The Starkville-Oktibbeha Consolidated School District has announced increased security measures following two alarming incidents involving firearms this week. Starting immediately, all schools in the district will require students to pass through metal detectors upon entering the buildings. This decision comes in response to heightened concerns over school safety after a handgun was found in a student’s backpack at Henderson Ward Stewart Elementary and a loaded ammunition clip was discovered on a student at Partnership Middle School.

The handgun incident occurred on Tuesday at Henderson Ward Stewart Elementary, which serves students in grades 2-4. On Wednesday, a loaded ammunition clip, also referred to as a magazine, was found on a student at the nearby Partnership Middle School, which caters to grades 6 and 7. Details regarding the circumstances surrounding the ammunition clip’s discovery remain unclear. However, district officials confirmed that the student from Partnership Middle School was removed from the classroom and the school in line with district policy. It was determined that this student did not have an actual weapon on campus, and no threats were made during either incident.

Communications Director Haley Montgomery stated that the student found with the loaded magazine was unable to identify the location of any gun or other weapon. Furthermore, officials confirmed that no weapon was located on the campus of Partnership Middle School. Fortunately, there were no instances of harm or threats resulting from the events.

The district’s decision to implement heightened security protocols is expected to remain in effect at least until the end of the current school year. Superintendent Tony McGee emphasized the importance of parental involvement in preventing dangerous items from being brought to school and urged parents to regularly check their children’s backpacks for inappropriate contents. This call for action reflects the growing concern regarding school safety within the district and the need for collaborative efforts to ensure a secure learning environment.

The Starkville-Oktibbeha School District is taking these incidents seriously and is actively working to strengthen safety procedures. The introduction of metal detectors aims to deter future occurrences and enhance the overall security of the school environment. As schools across the nation increasingly experience safety challenges, the Starkville-Oktibbeha district is prioritizing the well-being of its students and staff.

At this time, there have been no updates regarding potential charges related to the incidents. The community remains on alert as the district takes precautionary measures to safeguard its students and staff.

As the new security measures take effect, the Starkville-Oktibbeha School District community is encouraged to stay informed and engaged with the ongoing developments regarding school safety.
