News Summary

The Starkville-Oktibbeha Consolidated School District is aiming to secure $125 million in bonds for the construction of a new high school. The decision to increase the bond amount reflects rising construction costs and changing educational needs. A petition from registered voters is required by July 8 to proceed with the bond election. The current high school, serving around 1,400 students, has been deemed inadequate for modern educational requirements. Community collaboration and planning are ongoing to ensure the new facility meets the district’s growth.

Starkville, Mississippi Plans $125 Million Bond for New High School

The Starkville-Oktibbeha Consolidated School District (SOCSD) is seeking to borrow up to $125 million to fund the construction of a new high school. During a board meeting held on June 17, trustees approved a resolution of intent to issue these bonds, marking a significant increase from the previous authorization of $86 million. This decision comes amidst rising construction costs that have been exacerbated by the effects of COVID-19.

The decision to increase the bond amount by $39 million was influenced by the ongoing challenges in the construction market. Communications Director Haley Montgomery mentioned that the initial $86 million estimate is no longer sufficient to cover current material and labor costs. Moreover, Board President Cassandra Palmer indicated that the evolving programming needs within the district also contributed to the increase in the proposed bond.

Upcoming Bond Election Requirements

In order to proceed with the bond election, a petition must be submitted by July 8, signed by at least 20% of registered voters within the district. The board is set to finalize its action on the bond issuance during a meeting scheduled for the same day at 6 p.m.

Current High School Facilities

The current Starkville High School serves approximately 1,400 students and has experienced multiple additions over the years. However, it has been deemed “not as functional as it could be” for modern educational demands. The new high school aims to enhance programming and better accommodate the district’s growth.

Collaboration and Planning

As the project is still in its “early days,” a concrete timeline for construction has not been established. The district is collaborating with an architectural firm and a construction manager to develop a comprehensive project plan that meets the evolving educational needs of the Starkville community.

Potential Collaboration with Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science

There is a possibility that the new high school could share facilities with the Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science, though this arrangement is contingent upon legislative approval. Palmer noted that planning for shared spaces would progress as the project’s situation develops.

Long-standing Need for New Facilities

The push for a new high school has been ongoing, with district officials stating that a new facility is essential to cater to the growing educational requirements of Starkville. The quality of school infrastructure plays a crucial role in providing students with adequate learning environments and opportunities.

As the Starkville-Oktibbeha Consolidated School District moves forward with its plans, the community will wait to see the outcomes of the upcoming bond election and how the proposed new high school will reshape educational facilities in Starkville.
