Starkville – The Starkville Oktibbeha Consolidated School District celebrated student achievements in academics at the annual Starkville High School ACT 25/30+ Club Luncheon, recognizing students who excelled on the ACT college entrance exam during the 2024-2025 school year. The event honored a total of 52 students who scored a composite score of 25 or better and inducted 29 students who achieved an impressive score of 30 or above, placing them in the top 7% of test takers nationwide.

The luncheon was attended by students, families, and staff, with Starkville High principal Watress Harris addressing attendees and commending the students’ hard work and dedication. The celebration underscores not only the students’ academic achievements but also their readiness for college and future studies.

The SOCSD Central Office contributed to the festive atmosphere by providing pizza from Stromboli’s, while Mississippi State University added to the celebration by supplying ice cream for everyone present. Such community support highlights the collaboration between local institutions and schools to promote educational successes.

Dr. Vernita Wilson, the SOCSD Assistant Superintendent, remarked on the significant impact high ACT scores can have on students’ futures, particularly in relation to scholarship opportunities for higher education. In line with this, the Starkville Oktibbeha Consolidated School District recently received an overall A-rating from the Mississippi Department of Education for 2024, indicative of the district’s commitment to academic excellence.

Statistics show that more than 60% of Starkville High graduates continue their education at either community colleges or four-year universities, highlighting the school’s role in preparing students for their next steps. Starkville High offers over 50 dual credit and dual enrollment courses for 11th and 12th graders, allowing students to earn college credits while still in high school. Additionally, Advanced Placement (AP) courses are available, providing further avenues for students to secure college credit.

Strong partnerships with Mississippi State University deliver hands-on experiences for students through programs like the Early Honors Academy and the BasePair research program, enhancing their educational journey and making them more competitive for college admissions.

The district administers the ACT to 10th and 11th graders twice a year at no cost to families, ensuring greater accessibility to the exam. Alongside this, the school provides various ACT preparation resources, including boot camps designed to help students achieve their best possible scores.

Superintendent Dr. Tony McGee emphasized the necessity of supporting students in their quest for academic excellence, reiterating the significance of recognizing their accomplishments. Celebrating high ACT scores contributes to fostering a culture of excellence in the district, paving the way for families to access financial support for college.

The annual luncheon not only honors academic success but also reinforces the Starkville Oktibbeha Consolidated School District’s mission to equip students with the necessary skills and resources to thrive in their educational pursuits.
