Pensacola Mourns the Loss of a Beloved Community Matriarch
Mary Katherine Herschede “Mary Kay” Collins, an admirable figure in the Pensacola community, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 21, 2025, at the age of 86. After a prolonged illness, she left behind a legacy as a devoted woman of God, a loving wife, a nurturing mother, and a doting grandmother, deeply respected and cherished by all who knew her.
A Life Well Lived in Cincinnati
Mary Kay was the first of seven children born to Dick Herschede and Betty Strauss in Cincinnati, Ohio. Growing up in a close-knit family, she was molded from a young age with strong values and a commitment to her faith. She received her education from Mt. Notre Dame, a Catholic School that laid the foundation for her devout religious beliefs.
In 1957, she took a significant step in her spiritual journey by enrolling in the College of New Rochelle, a Catholic women’s institution founded by the Order of the Ursuline Nuns. Though she initially aspired to become a nun, Mary Kay made the decision to leave the Ursuline Order before her final vows, leading her to a new chapter in her life.
A New Home in Starkville
As her family’s business, the Herschede Clock Company, relocated to Starkville, Mississippi, Mary Kay experienced a considerable cultural shift. The transition from northern life and the contemplative routines of the convent to the lively college atmosphere at Mississippi State University marked the beginning of a new adventure.
A Loving Family
In August 1962, Mary Kay became engaged to Tom Collins just before he enlisted in the Air Force. They exchanged vows on December 27, 1962, embarking on a journey together that would bless them with four sons: Thomas, David, Patrick, and Kevin. With Tom’s career demanding much of his time, Mary Kay took on the vital role of primary caregiver. She was the ultimate homemaker, skillfully managing school projects, crafting Halloween costumes, and cheering on her sons at their sports events.
Known for her culinary talents, Mary Kay gained a stellar reputation for her homemade pizzas that were a staple at family gatherings. She had a special love for her eight grandchildren, always prioritizing their milestones, from birthday parties to graduations and weddings.
A Career and Community Involvement
Faith and Community Service
Mary Kay’s Catholic faith was the bedrock of her life. She attended Mass daily and volunteered extensively within her parish, especially in providing Hospice care. Her compassionate service was recognized when she was named “Volunteer of the Year” for six years, reflecting her commitment to serving those in need.
Sports and travel also brought joy to her life. Mary Kay and Tom, both avid fans, held season tickets for Mississippi State Football games. Together, they traveled to 49 of the 50 states and explored the western provinces of Canada, documenting their adventures in detailed logbooks.
A Farewell Celebration
Mary Kay’s legacy of love, service, and joy will forever remain in the hearts of her family, friends, and community. Her memory is one that will be treasured by all who were fortunate enough to know her.
