Columbia Buzz: Viskari Shines at Old Waverly Championship!

Columbia, Missouri – The University of Missouri men’s golf team is making waves at the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship, which kicked off on Monday, April 14, 2025. The sun was shining, and so were the Tigers, led by standout Veikka Viskari, a sophomore who is turning heads with his impressive performance.

A Strong Start and Stellar Second Round

Viskari began the tournament with a score of 74 in the opening round. While that score left room for improvement, he certainly made up for it in the second round, coming out swinging with an impressive three-under par 69. This impressive feat included a jaw-dropping six birdies, with four of those being sunk in the final stretch of his round. Talk about finishing strong!

After showcasing his skills on the course, Viskari climbed an astonishing 19 spots on the leaderboard, currently sitting at 21st overall after 36 holes. Overall, he’s got a total of 12 birdies after the first day. He’s showing that he’s not just a player; he’s a fighter, working his way up through tough competition.

Other Tigers in the Mix

Viskari wasn’t the only Tiger making his mark. Three of his teammates are also holding their ground, all tied at +4. Mattias Varjun played consistently with two rounds of 74. Brock Snyder began strong with a score of 72 but faced a bump in the road with a 76 in the second round. Meanwhile, fan-favorite Virgilio Paz also scored 74 for both rounds but added an exciting twist by recording an eagle on the par-five ninth hole during the opening round. That’s sure to get any golf fan’s heart racing!

To add to the excitement, Trevor Mierl also made an eagle on the par-five fifteenth hole during the first round, proving that the Tigers are bringing their A-game. It’s these moments that make tournaments so thrilling to watch!

Current Standing – All Eyes on the Prize

As it stands, the Mizzou men’s golf team is in 10th place out of 13 schools with a combined score of +10. They’re working hard to improve that score as they head into day two of the tournament, set for Tuesday morning. The first Tiger is set to tee off bright and early at 8:20 a.m., so fingers crossed for a great showing!

Competitive Field Ahead

The tournament is hosted by Mississippi State University at the stunning Old Waverly Golf Club, a par-72 course stretching to 7,088 yards. The competition is fierce with other high-profile teams in the mix, including No. 3 Ole Miss and No. 15 Alabama. These schools have a history of strong performances, so the Tigers will have to keep their focus sharp.

Good Vibes After a Recent Triumph

It’s worth noting that Mizzou recently snagged victory at the Tiger Intercollegiate, winning by an impressive eight strokes. Four golfers even finished in the top 10! Not to forget, Mattias Varjun celebrated his first collegiate victory there, marking a significant milestone in his sports journey.

The Tigers have been on a roll, averaging a stroke score of 281.3 over their last seven rounds. With such momentum, there’s a good chance they’ll keep pushing hard at the Old Waverly Championship. As the second day unfolds, all eyes will be on Viskari and the rest of the team to see how they’ll finish!

Stay tuned and keep cheering for our Missouri Tigers as they aim to conquer the greens!
