Mississippi State Bulldogs celebrating their series victory over Missouri
Mississippi State Bulldogs secured a series victory against the Missouri Tigers at Nusz Park, bolstered by stellar performances, especially from pitcher Raelin Chaffin. After a dominant win on Friday, the Bulldogs faced a setback on Saturday but bounced back impressively on Sunday. Key plays from hitters like Kiarra Sells and a consistent offensive strategy showcased their depth and strength, leading to a combined score of 18-8 over the weekend. As they gear up for an upcoming challenge against Oklahoma, the Bulldogs look to build on their recent successes.
In a thrilling weekend at Nusz Park, the Mississippi State Bulldogs showcased their strengths by securing a series victory against the Missouri Tigers. Ranked 16th in the nation, the Bulldogs improved their record to 33-11, with a confident 9-6 in SEC play, while Missouri fell to 21-24 and 3-12 in the league.
The star of the weekend was undoubtedly Raelin Chaffin, who demonstrated her pitching prowess by delivering two complete-game victories. On Friday, Chaffin was virtually untouchable, allowing just two hits and one walk while striking out five batters to propel her team to a resounding 7-0 victory. She continued her strong performance into Sunday, where she faced a rocky start, giving up two runs in the first inning. However, she made a triumphant comeback, retiring the last eleven batters she faced for a final score of 10-2.
Mississippi State’s offense racked up runs consistently throughout the series, showcasing depth and speed. Friday’s game kicked off with Sierra Sacco getting on base with an infield single and later scoring off Nadia Barbary‘s impressive RBI double. Adding to the fire, Kiarra Sells swung for the fences with a two-run homer, while Kylee Edwards joined the party with a solo home run, further sealing the deal for the Bulldogs.
Saturday was another story as Mississippi State encountered a glitch, losing 12-8 to the Tigers, despite Ella Wesolowski‘s standout 4-for-4 showing, including two doubles. Not one to stay down long, Wesolowski started Sunday strong with a two-run double that tied the game in the first inning.
Setting the tone for the rest of the afternoon, Sells struck again with another leadoff home run in the second inning. Soon after, Morgan Bernardini contributed with her own home run, leaving fans buzzing. The Bulldogs flexed their muscles in the fourth inning with a mighty two-run shot from Morgan Stiles and a massive three-run homer from Sells that expanded their lead and silenced the Missouri dugout.
Sacco’s remarkable consistency shone through as she reached base in all four of her plate appearances on Sunday, elevating her batting average to an impressive .504 and raising her on-base percentage to a jaw-dropping .599. Her incredible gameplay, along with her teammates, laid the foundation for a standout weekend for the Bulldogs.
The Missouri pitching staff struggled against Mississippi State, particularly during Saturday’s contest, where Chaffin inherited some tough matchups that resulted in a grand slam hit by Madison Walker. As the Bulldogs focus on strengthening their pitching rotation for the upcoming postseason, Head Coach Samantha Ricketts reiterated the importance of learning from defeats and how crucial it is to rise to the occasion.
Mississippi State will now turn its attention to the highly anticipated series against the formidable four-time defending national champion Oklahoma. Fans are highly excited to see how the Bulldogs will respond to this new challenge!
