Get ready, folks! Starkville is buzzing with excitement this weekend as the Cotton District Arts Festival makes a grand comeback after an 18-month hiatus. That’s right, the festival that we all know and love is finally back, and it promises to be bigger and better than ever. With everything from art to music to delicious food, there’s something for everyone!
The festival has faced its fair share of challenges in recent times—think pandemic issues and some pretty dodgy weather. As a result, it was rescheduled from its usual fall slot back to its original springtime date, which is just lovely! This year, the festival will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, so mark your calendars!
But wait, the fun doesn’t stop with just the Saturday festival. There are a couple of fantastic kickoff events happening on Friday. First up, there’s a reception at 4:30 p.m. at the MSU Visual Arts Center. Then from 6-9 p.m., you can head over to Fire Station Park for another kickoff celebration that features a concert and various vendors. What a way to warm up for the main event!
This year’s festival will feature a more concentrated layout, which is a bit different from the sprawling past festivals. The new design will be approximately half the length of previous events. This change has been made, in part, due to St. Joseph Catholic Church gearing up for Easter festivities. However, do not worry, as there’s still plenty to see and do!
With over 150 artists showcasing their work across 102 vendor tents, the selection is impressive! Artists will feature a stunning array of creations, including traditional art pieces, fiber arts, hand-crafted candles, organic soap, and even trendy leather boots. Also, keep an eye out for the new wave of artists who will be joining the festival this year—the competition for vendor spots has never been tougher!
This year, there’s an innovative twist: an interactive online map that will help you navigate through the festival using GPS. No more wandering aimlessly, you can easily find your favorite vendors and events!
And let’s not forget about food! The Taste of Starkville will host a local restaurant competition, which means you can indulge in all sorts of yummy local eats. For families, the festival offers plenty of attractions, including a Pet Parade, a costume contest, and a specially designed Children’s Village. There are loads of opportunities to get involved and have some fun!
The Starkville Area Arts Council is all about nurturing talent in the community, especially among youngsters. By encouraging young people to get involved in the arts through various programs, it’s clear they’re committed to fostering the next generation of creative minds.
