Starkville, Mississippi – Former Mississippi State University baseball pitcher Caleb Reed has died at the age of 35 after a battle with cancer. The university announced his death on July 2, 2023, following Reed’s diagnosis with aggressive leukemia and lymphoma in late May.

In light of his illness, a GoFundMe page was established by friends and family to support Reed, his wife Robin, and their three children during his treatment at the UAB Medical Center. The page aimed to alleviate some of the financial burdens stemming from his medical costs and support his family during this challenging time.

Reed was a key figure in the Mississippi State baseball program from 2009 to 2012, notably as a standout reliever. He recorded a total of 21 saves throughout his junior and senior seasons, showing exceptional skill on the mound with a 1.55 ERA during his junior year and a 2.47 ERA in his senior year. His overall collegiate career statistics included 177 strikeouts in 207 innings pitched and a career earned run average of 4.22.

During his time with the Bulldogs, Reed played a crucial role in leading the team to important victories, including the 2011 Super Regional and the 2012 SEC Tournament Championship titles. In 2011, he earned second-team All-SEC honors and was recognized for his contributions with 12 saves, placing him among the top ten in program history at that time. His senior year saw him named a preseason All-American, and he led the Bulldogs with nine saves.

Reed’s performance was not limited to the regular season; he was instrumental in all six of the team’s victories during the SEC tournament in 2012. His contributions included vital semifinal wins over LSU and a championship game victory against Vanderbilt. Beyond athletics, he was also recognized for his efforts in community service, earning a spot on the SEC Baseball Community Service team for his volunteer work in Starkville, Mississippi.

Before his collegiate career, Reed attended Bayou Academy in Cleveland, Mississippi, where he excelled in multiple sports, including baseball, football, basketball, and track. His talents led to his inclusion in The Clarion Ledger’s Dandy Dozen list during high school, a recognition of the top prep athletes in the state.

As the sports community mourns his passing, details regarding the specifics of his funeral services have yet to be announced. Caleb Reed is survived by his wife Robin and their three children, leaving behind a legacy of athletic achievements, community service, and cherished family moments that touched those around him.
