Columbus – Bill Threadgill, a respected lawyer and World War II veteran, passed away on April 30, 2025, just weeks shy of his 102nd birthday. His remarkable life spanned more than 37,000 days, characterized by his commitment to law, service, and community involvement. He is remembered for his exceptional contributions to both his profession and family.

Born on July 20, 1923, in Greenwood, Mississippi, Threadgill’s journey took a significant turn when he left college at the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) in 1943 to serve in the military during World War II. As a navigator on a B-17 bomber, he undertook 20 missions over Nazi Germany and played a crucial role in significant campaigns, including the Battle of the Bulge. His military service not only demonstrated his courage but also his ability to train fellow navigators, showcasing his leadership skills during critical moments in history.

Following his military service, Threadgill returned to Ole Miss to complete his undergraduate degree and subsequently earned his law degree from the George Washington School of Law in 1949. He arrived in Columbus on Thanksgiving Day the same year, where he began practicing law under attorney John Holloman for seven years before establishing his own firm. In 1990, his firm merged with another, forming the largest law firm outside Jackson, Mississippi. Throughout his legal career, Threadgill specialized in civil and estate law and served as president of the Mississippi Defense Lawyers Association, further solidifying his status within the legal community.

After 45 years of practicing law, Threadgill retired in 1999 but continued to maintain an office within the firm for several years. Colleagues praised him as an exceptional trial lawyer, and he authored three books, including reflecting on his legal career and military service. His passion for writing allowed him to share his experiences with others, contributing to both his personal legacy and the legal field.

Outside of law, Threadgill was known for his love of turkey hunting and for teaching Sunday School to sixth graders for over 25 years. His zest for travel was evident through the family vacations he organized to various destinations, including the Upper Peninsula in Michigan and Jackson Hole, Wyoming. Additionally, he marked significant birthdays at iconic locations such as the Kentucky Derby and the Grove Park Inn in Asheville, North Carolina.

Devoted to his wife, Leslie, who passed away in 2016 after 64 years of marriage, Threadgill cared for her diligently during her battle with dementia. Together, they raised four children and enjoyed the blessings of ten grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. His family was a central part of his life, and his commitment to them was unwavering.

In addition to his personal pursuits, Threadgill actively contributed to various community and charitable foundations, emphasizing the importance of staying mentally and physically engaged throughout life. Even in his later years, he exemplified these principles while residing in a condo at Old Waverly, where he required assistance from a caregiver. Threadgill was known for his good humor, lucidity, and an indomitable spirit, refusing to concede to the challenges of old age.

The legacy of Bill Threadgill is one of resilience, dedication, and service. His life story serves as an inspiration to many, reflecting the importance of contributing to one’s community, valuing family, and embracing every moment of life to the fullest.
