Citizens attending a community meeting on nonprofit funding cuts

News Summary

The recent $400 million cut to the AmeriCorps VISTA program has resulted in immediate layoffs affecting nonprofits in Starkville. Thousands of VISTA employees, including arts programming assistants, face administrative leave. With critical roles unfilled, organizations like the Starkville Area Arts Council and Starkville Strong are grappling with increased operational costs and a decline in donations, urgently seeking solutions to maintain vital services in the community.

Starkville – The recent $400 million funding cut to the AmeriCorps VISTA program has had immediate and detrimental effects on numerous nonprofits in Starkville. Cornelius Edmond, an arts programming assistant with the Starkville Area Arts Council, was informed of his termination via email on Monday, March 31, 2023. He is one of the thousands of AmeriCorps VISTA employees currently facing administrative leave due to these budget reductions mandated by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

As part of the cutoff, VISTA employees have been placed on paid leave through May 19, allowing them a short window to seek reassignments before potentially facing job termination. The AmeriCorps VISTA program connects volunteers to various nonprofit organizations, providing them with an annual salary of approximately $24,000, health benefits, and a $7,500 education stipend upon the completion of their service. Thousands of VISTA members are being forced out of their roles unexpectedly, which will have a wide-reaching impact on the services these organizations provide.

Edmond had been affiliated with AmeriCorps through Mississippi State University’s Maroon Volunteer Center since July 2023. Prior to the funding cuts, the Maroon Volunteer Center had received $202,733 in federal grants for the AmeriCorps program. With over 30,000 AmeriCorps VISTA members exiting their positions, the ramifications extend well beyond individual job losses.

Nonprofit organizations such as the Starkville Area Arts Council and Starkville Strong are facing an uphill battle due to the staffing changes. Juliette Reid, the interim executive director of the Starkville Area Arts Council, expressed concerns about increased staffing costs, as nonprofits will need to bring in replacements for the VISTA members now terminated. This challenge is exacerbated by a decline in donations and rising operational costs.

Edmond’s role included critical tasks such as managing social media initiatives, composing newsletters, and assisting with grant applications. The loss of such positions not only affects the day-to-day operations of the organizations but threatens their overall functionality. Rebekah Carruth, an operations coordinator for Starkville Strong, also faced termination and expressed a deep sense of loss regarding the cancellation of the VISTA program. In addition, Kimberly Christy, a case manager at Starkville Strong, has pledged to continue volunteering despite the program cuts, demonstrating commitment to the organization’s mission.

Brandi Herrington, executive director of Starkville Strong, noted intentions to recruit additional VISTA employees through United Way, despite the looming threat that this program may also face similar funding cuts. Christian Bradley, United Way’s AmeriCorps Vista coordinator, has shared worries over possible termination of the program and insufficient communication regarding the future of ongoing projects.

The impact of funding cuts is particularly acute for organizations focusing on critical social issues, such as homelessness. For instance, the J.L. King Center lost its VISTA employee, Adarian Johnson, who managed essential technological support for the center. Margaret Brown, director of the center, highlighted the significant disruption left in the aftermath of Johnson’s departure.

Community leaders, including Reid, Herrington, and Brown, have called for the public to support local nonprofits through donations or volunteering efforts. Brittany Turner, a representative from the Boys and Girls Club of the Golden Triangle, also conveyed the importance of VISTA members in their daily operations since they play a crucial role in addressing community needs. The organization is now facing the challenge of restructuring to fill the gaps left behind by the departing members.

Former VISTA member Rebekah Carruth emphasized the value of the program as a beneficial investment for communities, arguing that it ultimately pays for itself in the long run. As the AmeriCorps VISTA funding cuts take effect, Starkville nonprofits find themselves in a precarious position, urgently searching for immediate solutions to sustain their services amidst funding uncertainty.
