Starkville Academy Basketball and Football Teams Prepare for Upcoming Challenges

In the bustling city of Starkville, excitement is building as both the basketball and football teams prepare for their upcoming challenges. With standout players, crucial matchups, and plenty of determination on both sides, the spirit of competition is alive and well at Starkville Academy.

The Basketball Buzz

This season, Brayden Frazier, wearing jersey number 24, has been lighting up the basketball courts with his incredible shooting skills, especially against formidable opponents like Choctaw County. The boys’ basketball team is gearing up for a busy schedule that includes pivotal matchups against Heritage Academy, Rossville Christian, and Magnolia Heights in Class 5A, District 1. Not to be overlooked, the non-conference games promise more action with rivals like Greenville Christian, Marshall Academy, Delta Streets Academy, Central Hinds, Wayne Academy, and also Choctaw County, a member of the MHSAA.

All eyes will be on the North Tournament at East Rankin Academy, where Starkville Academy will take on the No. 1 seed, Simpson Academy. As the basketball team’s performance is highlighted in the news from February 4, fans are eager to see how the players will fare against such tough competition.

In a celebratory Thursday night event, the academy took a moment to honor 14 senior basketball players. The boys’ team claimed a victory against Columbus Christian, winning decisively with a score of 73-47. Three senior players shone brightly, with Luke McKenzie leading the way with 22 points, followed by Brayden Frazier with 10 and Kaleb Prather contributing 7 points.

Football Season Reflections and Hopes

Luke McKenzie, who successfully made the transition from a wide receiver/safety role. His contributions were significant, racking up 24 receptions for 481 yards and an impressive 8 touchdowns while also proving his defensive prowess with 5 interceptions.

The team kicked off their 2023 season with a bang, winning their first five games and closing the regular season with a commendable 8-2 record. They secured a first-round bye in the MAIS Class 5A playoffs, only to face a setback against Simpson Academy, where they lost 26-7 after a strong quarterfinal win against Leake Academy.

Last year’s standout performer, senior running back Luke Johnson, was a force on the field, running for 1,183 yards at an average of nine yards per carry, and scoring an impressive 11 touchdowns. With hopes set high for the coming season, the returning offensive line boasts three starters, which adds a sense of optimism for what’s ahead.

On the defensive side, players Brody Burkley and Blake Little are expected to lead following the departure of last season’s top two tacklers, bringing fresh energy and focus to the team’s defense. The upcoming season opens on August 16 against Lamar, with a tough schedule that features matchups against Chambers Academy and a much-anticipated rematch with Leake Academy.

The coaching staff is eager to guide the teams through the challenges ahead, including head coach Chase Nicholson and his dedicated group of assistants. As the football players reflect on last year’s playoff loss, there’s a palpable energy in the air, motivating the team to strive for greatness in the upcoming season.

With such thrilling prospects and talented players, Starkville Academy stands poised to tackle every challenge that comes their way, both on the basketball court and the football field. The community is all abuzz with anticipation, and it’s safe to say that Starkville is ready for an exhilarating sports season!
