Born on June 20, 1959, in Starkville, Rusty was a talented athlete, excelling in both football and baseball during his time at New Hope High School. His competitive nature and charisma earned him admiration from teammates and rivals alike. Beyond sports, Rusty had a passion for leisure activities that included watching sporting events, playing pool, and throwing darts, all of which provided him with a sense of community and friendly competition.
Professionally, Rusty spent more than 20 years as a corrosion control maintenance technician at Columbus Air Force Base. His expertise in this field was valued by his colleagues, and he contributed greatly to his workplace.
As a devoted member of the Baptist faith, Rusty held strong beliefs that guided his life and relationships. He is survived by his siblings, including sisters Denise O’Brian (Dink) from Smithville and Michelle Mitchell of Columbus, as well as his brother Robbie Mitchell (Pat) from Columbus. He also leaves behind his nephew Chris O’Brian (Nikki) and niece Torie O’Brian, in addition to several great-nieces and great-nephews, including Luke O’Brian (Hailey), Lane O’Brian, and Tenley O’Brian.
Rusty’s family also includes step-siblings Edward Patton, Tamela Patton Jordan, and Tiffany Patton Browning, each with their families. He was preceded in death by his father, Coy Mitchell; mother, Dot Chesser Patton; and step-father, Jim Patton. Many cousins and friends cherished him greatly, and his loss has left a profound mark on all who knew him.
A private family service will be held at a later date, with Rusty being laid to rest beside his mother.
