Starkville, Mississippi – Mississippi State Hires Brian O’Connor as New Head Baseball Coach Following Chris Lemonis’ Dismissal

Mississippi State University has announced the hiring of Brian O’Connor as its new head baseball coach, following the dismissal of Chris Lemonis. O’Connor, who recently completed his 21st season at the University of Virginia, is recognized as one of the most accomplished active coaches in collegiate baseball.

O’Connor’s appointment comes after a challenging season for the Mississippi State baseball team, which saw Lemonis fired due to a lackluster 7-14 record in Southeastern Conference (SEC) play. Interim head coach Justin Parker stepped in during the coaching transition, leading the team to a 15-15 record within the SEC and concluding the season with an overall record of 34-21, which included participation in the NCAA Tournament.

Throughout his tenure at UVA, O’Connor made a significant impact, leading the program to a College World Series championship in 2015. His record at Virginia stands at 885 wins, 370 losses, and 2 ties, and includes seven appearances at the College World Series. As a coach in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), he recorded 362 wins against 234 losses over his career and was named ACC Coach of the Year five times.

Mississippi State’s decision to bring O’Connor on board was swift, following the team’s elimination from the NCAA Tournament in the Tallahassee Regional and Lemonis’s firing in April. Athletic Director Zac Selmon emphasized the necessity for changes in leadership to advance the future of Mississippi State baseball. In the announcement, he acknowledged Lemonis for his contributions to the program, which notably included a national championship in 2021.

Prior to his successful stint at Virginia, O’Connor served in various coaching roles, including as an assistant coach at Notre Dame from 1995 to 2003 and pitching coach at Creighton from 1993 to 1995. He also gained experience in the Philadelphia Phillies minor league system before transitioning to coaching. O’Connor’s recruitment to replace Lemonis was strategic, as he was previously linked to the head coaching position at Texas A&M but opted to remain at UVA.

As O’Connor takes on the role of head coach, he brings with him not only a wealth of experience but also a legacy of accomplishments, including leading Virginia to two ACC championships and advancing three of his last five teams to the College World Series in Omaha.

Mississippi State is expected to search for O’Connor’s successor at UVA, with his buyout from the university reported to be $800,000. O’Connor expressed enthusiasm about leading the Mississippi State program, echoing its strong tradition, passionate fan base, and historic legacy within college baseball.

In his new position, O’Connor becomes the ninth head coach in the history of Mississippi State baseball, and he is expected to make immediate changes that will reinvigorate the program and set the standard for future success.
