News Summary

Severe thunderstorms caused significant disruptions in Columbus, MS, leading to downed trees, power outages, and flooded roads over the weekend. Despite heavy rain causing road closures and impacting emergency services, no injuries were reported. Local authorities are urging residents to stay prepared as unpredictable weather patterns continue to affect the area, raising concerns about community readiness and response capabilities.

Columbus Faces Flooding and Power Outages Following Severe Thunderstorms

Columbus, MS – The Golden Triangle area experienced significant turmoil over the weekend as a series of severe thunderstorms rolled through, wreaking havoc with downed trees, power outages, and flooded roads. The storms hit Lowndes County on Saturday afternoon and continued into early Sunday morning, leaving a trail of damage in their wake.

Impact of the Storms

On Saturday afternoon, a strong storm moved through Lowndes County around 2 p.m., resulting in several trees and power lines being downed across the region. Reports indicate that one tree fell on a house in Ronnie Cove, located in the Lacy Subdivision east of Columbus, near the Alabama border. Fortunately, there were no reports of injuries, but the damage was notable.

The stormy weather continued into Sunday when an early morning storm brought nearly 4 inches of rain between 2 a.m. and 7 a.m. at the Golden Triangle Regional Airport, according to data from the National Weather Service. Despite the intensity of the rain, this storm caused minimal additional damage compared to its predecessor, with only a few trees downed, as highlighted by county Emergency Management officials.

Flooding and Power Outages

In Oktibbeha County, flooding was reported to affect multiple roads, requiring emergency response teams to assist vehicles caught in floodwaters, such as an incident on Starr Road. The heavy rains led to several road closures in the area, creating challenges for motorists and emergency services alike.

Power disruptions were widespread during the storms, affecting approximately 1,800 customers, particularly in rural areas, according to the public relations director of 4-County Electric Power Association. Fortunately, by mid-morning on Sunday, the number of outages had decreased significantly to fewer than 300. Customers reported power outages on social media platforms, but the Columbus Light and Water utility reported no outages listed on their outage map by the same time. Efforts to obtain further details from the General Manager of Columbus Light and Water went unanswered.

Additionally, Starkville experienced fewer issues from the storms, with only a handful of outages reported. Starkville Utilities indicated that fewer than 20 outages occurred in the area due to the extreme weather conditions.

Background on Recent Weather Patterns

This past weekend’s severe thunderstorms are part of a wider trend affecting the region, where unpredictable weather patterns have been increasingly common. The Golden Triangle area has seen an uptick in severe weather, raising concerns among local emergency management officials about preparedness and response capabilities. The importance of community readiness and infrastructure resilience is emphasized in light of these unexpected weather events.

Local authorities are encouraging residents to stay informed about weather conditions and to prepare for possible future storms as weather systems continue to be volatile, contributing to both flooding and power outages. Residents are reminded to report any downed trees or power lines to local authorities and to heed warnings regarding travel in flooded areas.

Emergency response teams remain active in assessing the damage and ensuring the safety of residents across the Golden Triangle. As recovery efforts begin, the community comes together to support those affected by the severe weather.
