BATON ROUGE, La. — Mississippi State soccer hit the woodwork three times but could not find a goal on Sunday in Baton Rouge, La., settling for a 0-0 draw with LSU that still made a bit of program history.
The result means the Bulldogs went the entire regular season without a road loss, a first for the program. State is now 8-2-6 overall and 2-1-6 in SEC play, and the draw was its sixth of the year.
The two teams combined for 35 shots, but only nine were on target. Elsa Johnson, moved from the wing to striker for this match, was State’s most dangerous player with five shots, three of them on goal. She had a breakaway in the 49th minute and later got loose on a through ball from Kara Harris, but both tries slid wide.
Harris hit the crossbar in the 56th minute, and Kyli Switalski rattled the post in the 74th. Late in the match, Hailey Johnson broke in alone but her shot from the top of the box rolled just outside the left post.
At the other end, State held LSU to five shots on goal. Jenny Harrison made three saves, and Switalski cleared two shots off the line on one corner kick. LSU leading scorer Ava Galligan had five shots, but only one was on goal.
The Bulldogs close the regular season at home against Alabama on Sunday, Nov. 1, at noon Central at the MSU Soccer Field in Starkville. State sits tied for eighth in the league, and tiebreakers would make it the ninth seed for the SEC Tournament if the season ended now, after being picked 14th in the preseason coaches poll. A win over Alabama could lift the Bulldogs into a tie for sixth with help elsewhere.
