STARKVILLE, Miss. — The Egg Bowl rivalry is spilling off the football field and into the food pantry this November, as Bully’s Pantry at Mississippi State in Starkville goes head to head with Grove Grocery at Ole Miss in a contest to stock shelves for hungry students.

The Egg Bowl Food Fight runs from Nov. 1 through Nov. 20, and the winner is the campus pantry that collects more. Mississippi State scores a point for each food or personal care item given and for each dollar donated. Students on campus may also give away block meals from their plans, worth one point apiece.

Pantry organizers are asking for single-serving and canned meals, canned tuna or chicken, peanut and seed butters, pasta, rice, breakfast cereal, frozen dishes and granola bars. Hygiene and household needs such as soap, deodorant, toothpaste, feminine products, laundry pods and paper goods are welcome too.

Drop-offs go to Bully’s Pantry at 120 Morgan Ave. on weekdays between 1 and 4 p.m., and other times can be set up by calling 662-325-7683. Donors may also ship items from the pantry’s Amazon wish list or give money through the Bulldog Boost crowdfunding site.

Student Affairs and the Student Association share the job of running the pantry, which belongs to the MSU Food Security Network. Students who cannot get to the building can order curbside pickup, and a free vending machine for quick necessities waits on the ground floor of the Colvard Student Union.

Meal plan holders already have one way to help year-round. Through the Block by Block program, a student with a valid plan can give up to three block meals a semester, and students without a plan or flex dollars can apply to have five meals loaded onto their cards.
